The Margin: ‘Post-apocalyptic!’ — Drones capture eerie footage of America on lockdown

Three out of four Americans and 32 U.S. states are currently being told to stay at home to help flatten the curve as the coronavirus continues to spread across the country.

That’s making for some empty city streets.

While hospitals grapple with chaos behind their closed doors amid a mad scramble to keep patients alive, a decidedly different — and eerily quiet — picture emerges from above.

Vice gathered images from four different drone operators in San Francisco, Seattle, New York and Los Angeles to offer a look at these typically hectic and crowded metropolises.

One viewer described it as a “post-apocalyptic movie” landscape. Others were reminded of the History Channel series “Life after people,” as well as “the scene in ‘Avengers’ when Thanos snapped his fingers.” The bright side? “No traffic!” wrote one optimist.

When can we expect these streets to start humming again? President Trump on Sunday announced that federal guidance urging social distancing will remain in place through April 30.

Meanwhile, the U.S. maintains its spot as the global leader in number of cases of COVID-19, as state governors continued to complain about inadequate testing and predict that the worst is yet to come. New York has 75,795 cases of the virus and at least 1,550 New Yorkers have died.

There are now 809,608 cases of COVID-19 around the world with at least 39,545 deaths, according to the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University. At least 172,869 people have recovered.
