announced in a blog post that it will introduce an opt-in age-verification requirement, which will be needed for new features like Spatial Voice chat. Verification will also be used in collaboration projects, so that developers and creators know with whom they are working.

Age verification will require a user to scan an ID card or passport and send a selfie to verify a user’s age and identity. Roblox said it would not store the document data or the selfie for safety and privacy reasons.

Roblox shares were up 2.6% at $80.89 in Wednesday trading at last check.

When Roblox went public in March, it said it hoped to grow by appealing to older users. Roblox rose to popularity by being an online platform geared to users younger than 13, ages at which most online platforms will not allow users to have an account. That unique quality drew extra scrutiny from parents and regulators to ensure the safety of children online.

Roblox said it was putting age verification into place as “nearly 50% of the users on our platform are over the age of 13 as of Q2 2021.”
