At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.33%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.47%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 1.69%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 2.63% or 3.05 points to trade at 119.02 at the close. Meanwhile, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 2.56% or 5.40 points to end at 216.41 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 2.11% or 0.96 points to 46.40 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which fell 4.55% or 5.27 points to trade at 110.68 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 3.99% or 7.53 points to end at 181.16 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was down 3.46% or 4.92 points to 137.19.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which rose 8.41% to 4.64, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) which was up 5.11% to settle at 1306.60 and Invesco Plc (NYSE:IVZ) which gained 5.30% to close at 15.30.
The worst performers were Air Products and Chemicals Inc (NYSE:APD) which was down 9.85% to 279.43 in late trade, Kohls Corp (NYSE:KSS) which lost 9.81% to settle at 23.59 and Nordstrom Inc (NYSE:JWN) which was down 9.48% to 16.05 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Five Prime Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:FPRX) which rose 233.33% to 17.80, Fuel Tech Inc (NASDAQ:FTEK) which was up 69.51% to settle at 1.2900 and Equillium Inc (NASDAQ:EQ) which gained 41.09% to close at 4.91.
The worst performers were Pareteum Corp (NASDAQ:TEUM) which was down 32.62% to 0.3167 in late trade, eGain Corporation (NASDAQ:EGAN) which lost 28.93% to settle at 12.04 and Teligent Inc (NASDAQ:TLGT) which was down 24.47% to 0.5096 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1569 to 1276 and 78 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1406 fell and 1318 advanced, while 75 ended unchanged.
Shares in Five Prime Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:FPRX) rose to 52-week highs; rising 233.33% or 12.46 to 17.80. Shares in Pareteum Corp (NASDAQ:TEUM) fell to 52-week lows; down 32.62% or 0.1533 to 0.3167. Shares in Fuel Tech Inc (NASDAQ:FTEK) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 69.51% or 0.5290 to 1.2900.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.19% to 24.01 a new 1-month low.
Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.80% or 15.05 to $1861.35 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.19% or 0.08 to hit $41.44 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.30% or 0.13 to trade at $43.74 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.35% to 1.1772, while USD/JPY rose 0.14% to 105.43.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.32% at 93.032.
