The Biden administration is set to announce a range of new sanctions against Cuba as early as Thursday, according to a person familiar with the matter, charging that the government and its agents engaged in violence, repression and human rights violations against peaceful protesters.
The administration planned to target senior Interior Ministry and police officials—who the U.S. charges were involved in the crackdown, which included the disappearance of hundreds of people protesting against the government last week, according to the person familiar with the matter.
U.S. officials have signaled plans for sanctions in recent days.
“We are going to focus on applying hard-hitting sanctions on regime officials,” Julie Chung, acting assistant secretary for the State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, said Wednesday on her official Twitter account.
