Australia stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 up 0.14%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.14%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Northern Star Resources Ltd (ASX:NST), which rose 11.20% or 0.980 points to trade at 9.730 at the close. Meanwhile, Evolution Mining Ltd (ASX:EVN) added 8.92% or 0.34 points to end at 4.15 and Silver Lake Resources Ltd (ASX:SLR) was up 6.96% or 0.120 points to 1.845 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Webjet Ltd (ASX:WEB), which fell 3.52% or 0.19 points to trade at 5.21 at the close. Medibank Private Ltd (ASX:MPL) declined 3.24% or 0.110 points to end at 3.280 and Ingenia Communities Group (ASX:INA) was down 3.19% or 0.19 points to 5.77.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 801 to 665 and 364 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 0.07% to 13.704 a new 1-month high.

Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.15% or 2.80 to $1840.40 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.43% or 0.37 to hit $85.43 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.61% or 0.54 to trade at $87.90 a barrel.

AUD/USD was up 0.41% to 0.7240, while AUD/JPY rose 0.52% to 82.85.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.08% at 95.425.
