The Biden administration is rolling out new measures aimed at Cuba that include efforts to improve internet access for the Caribbean island nation’s people, along with fresh sanctions, a senior administration official said Friday.
The internet efforts stem from wanting to support the ability of the Cuban people to communicate with each other, and the new sanctions are focusing on on individuals and entities that are involved in a crackdown after big protests against the country’s communist regime, according to the official.
The Biden administration imposed sanctions last week against a top Cuban military official and a special police unit and warned more sanctions were coming.
President Joe Biden has expressed support for Cubans who have been taking part in the biggest anti-government demonstrations in decades. He was due to meet on Friday afternoon with Cuban-American leaders at the White House to discuss the protests and his administration’s response.
