Trump Today: Trump to ease environmental rules to speed up infrastructure projects

President Donald Trump on Wednesday is expected to announce a new rule to speed up the environmental review process for highways and gas pipelines, among other infrastructure projects.

Trump will announce the rule at the UPS UPS, +1.69% Hapeville Airport Hub in Atlanta. The White House said the administration’s efforts will expedite the expansion of Interstate 75 near the Georgia capital city.

Critics call Trump’s efforts an attempt to limit the public’s ability to influence proposed projects under the National Environmental Policy Act, a 50-year-old environmental-protection law.

Trump has made slashing government regulation a hallmark of his presidency and held it out as a way to boost jobs. Environmental groups say the wave of regulatory rollbacks by the Trump administration threatens public health and makes it harder to curb global warming.

Trump’s announcement comes a day after presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden unveiled a plan that includes spending $2 trillion over four years on clean-energy projects.
