Presidential advisor Jared Kushner said Tuesday a deal on another big coronavirus aid bill may have to wait until after the Nov. 3 election because of politics.

Appearing on CNBC, Kushner, who is married to President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka, said, “The hope is that we’ll still get to a deal. But it may have to happen after the election because there obviously are politics involved. This is Washington.”

After lawmakers took a break for the August recess, many thought a fiscal stimulus deal could hitch a ride on a temporary spending bill that needs to be completed before Sept. 30. But to simplify that effort and keep the government open after Sept. 30, congressional leaders and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin agreed to decouple the two issues.

Since then, Senate Republicans united behind a narrow bill that was blocked by Democrats last week and attention in the House is already turning to negotiating the details of a stopgap spending bill, leaving the stimulus’ prospects dim.

Kushner cautioned against too much pessimism, though. “Again, as you know, in all negotiations, everyone’s at ‘no’ before they get to ‘yes,’” he said.

“There’s a lot of posturing. There’s some differences of opinion,” Kushner said.
