Happy New Year!
In 2023, Jan. 1 falls on a Sunday. That means many government offices and some businesses and service providers will be closed not only on New Year’s Day, but also on Monday, Jan. 2, the day that’s being federally observed for the holiday. (Hours may be limited at some places of business on Dec. 31, or New Year’s Eve, as well.)
Financial markets — the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and bond markets —- are ordinarily closed on Sunday, and they will be closed this year on Jan. 2, as well. But what about everything else?

Here’s a rundown of what you can expect.
Mail and packages
The United States Postal Service (USPS) will not deliver mail on Jan. 1 and Jan. 2, and local post offices will also be closed. Priority Express Mail, however, will be delivered both days.
Fedex
FDX,
will not offer service on Jan. 1, except for Custom Critical deliveries and modified same-day city deliveries. On Jan. 2, it will not offer its Express delivery, but will offer most other services.
UPS
UPS,
will not deliver or pick up on Jan. 1 and Jan. 2, though UPS Express Critical Service is available both days. UPS stores will not be open on Jan. 1, but limited locations will be open Jan. 2.
Banks
Most banks will be closed on Jan. 1 and Jan. 2, although TD Bank
TD,
is a notable exception in that it will be open on Jan. 2 during normal hours. But you can always visit an ATM or use your bank’s app for certain services.
Government offices
All nonessential federal offices are closed on Jan. 1 and Jan. 2, and the same generally applies to state government offices. Government-run national parks will also be closed on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1.
Schools
Public schools and many private schools generally won’t be open on Jan. 1 and Jan. 2, which for most schools fall during the longer winter break.
Stores
Many stores are open on Jan. 1 and Jan. 2. Some exceptions apply, however, on Jan. 1 — Costco and Trader Joe’s are both closed that day, for examples. In any case, it’s always best to check with the store before heading out on a shopping run.
