The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention added Ukraine to its list of places to avoid as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
Ukraine is now in the CDC’s “Level 4” risk category. The CDC advises Americans avoid travel altogether to destinations in this category, which applies to places that have had more than 500 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents in the past 28 days. The U.S. has had 155 new infections per 100,000 people in just the past seven days.
Ukraine joins a list of nearly 80 destinations to which the CDC says to avoid travel, including Ireland, Greece, The Bahamas, Switzerland, Norway and the United Kingdom.
The CDC also added 10 destinations to its “Level 3” category, including Egypt, Lebanon, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Libya, Mauritius, Saint Martin, Sri Lanka, the Cayman Islands and the Dominican Republic.
For “Level 3” destinations, which have had 100 to 500 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the past 28 days, the CDC advises that travelers are fully vaccinated before travel. The health agency also advises unvaccinated travelers to avoid nonessential travel to “Level 3” destinations.
The CDC’s list of risky destinations to travel during the pandemic is updated regularly.
In its general international travel guidance, the CDC advises to not travel at all unless you are fully vaccinated. It also says that international travel poses additional risks, and even fully vaccinated travelers could contract or spread COVID-19 variants.
The White House has also outlined new rules for travelers to the U.S. Beginning Nov. 8, foreign, nonimmigrant adults traveling to the United States will need to be fully vaccinated, with only limited exceptions, and all travelers will need to be tested for the virus before boarding a plane to the U.S. There will be tightened restrictions for American and foreign citizens who are not fully vaccinated.
