Turkey and Montenegro join the list of riskiest places to travel to during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to updated guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC, which regularly updates its travel guidance, added four destinations to the Level 4 category on Monday. In addition to Turkey and Montenegro, the Island of Jersey and the Caribbean island Dominica were added to the “very high” COVID-19 category.
The CDC advises Americans avoid travel altogether to destinations in the Level 4 category, which applies to places that have had more than 500 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents in the past 28 days. The U.S. has had 287 new infections per 100,000 people in just the past seven days.
The destinations join a list of more than 70 places to which the CDC says to avoid travel, including France, Brazil, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
The CDC also added five places to the Level 3 category, which includes destinations that have had 100 to 500 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the past 28 days. Chile, Kosovo, Mozambique, North Macedonia and Uruguay joined that list.
For Level 3, the CDC recommends that travelers are fully vaccinated before travel, and that unvaccinated travelers should avoid nonessential travel to that destination.
In its general international travel guidance, the CDC advises to not travel at all unless you are fully vaccinated.
“Fully vaccinated travelers are less likely to get and spread COVID-19,” the agency said. “However, international travel poses additional risks, and even fully vaccinated travelers might be at increased risk for getting and possibly spreading some COVID-19 variants.”
Travelers returning by air to the U.S., including U.S. citizens, are still required to have a negative COVID test before entry. You can see a full list and map of the CDC’s travel recommendations here.
