Tesla to launch Powerwall 3

An exclusive report by Fred Lambert of Electrek.co reports that Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) is preparing to launch its third-generation home battery pack named Powerwall 3.

Tesla launched its first-generation Powerwall back in 2015 and it almost instantly became the most popular home battery pack in the residential market. Since then, the EV maker launched a second-generation Powerwall as well as its Powerwall Plus, which included a new inverter and higher power output.

Last year, Electrek reported on an internal meeting at Tesla where Seth Winger, senior manager of solar products engineering at Tesla, confirmed that the company was preparing to launch new home energy products.

According to the report, Electrek has obtained confirmation that Tesla has applied to have a new product named Powerwall 3 approved as certified equipment for connection with some electric utilities.

Unfortunately, new specs and/or features were not listed in the certification applications. However, based on previous reports, consumers can expect the new Powerwall 3 to have higher performance and easier installations. It’s also not a far stretch to assume the home battery pack will come with a new aesthetic design.

Considering the Tesla Powerwall 3 is already certified by a handful of electric utilities, electrek expects the product to be launched soon.

Shares of TSLA are down 2.77% in afternoon trading on Wednesday.
