The NBA is nearing a deal with ESPN DIS, -0.16% to televise a H-O-R-S-E competition, which would include Chris Paul, Trae Young and Zach LaVine, among others, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The competition could also include WNBA players and recent NBA alumni. Dwayne Wade has been rumored to participate.
The shot-for-shot game involves one player making a basket — often a trick shot — and his opponent having to make the same shot. If the second player misses it, he gets a letter. When he misses five shots — enough to spell out H-O-R-S-E — he loses.
The NBA hosted a H-O-R-S-E competition as part of its All-Star Weekend in 2009 and 2010. It struggled to gain traction and was canceled after only two years. The NBA hosts events such as the dunk contest and 3-point-shootout during its All-Star Weekend.
With all major sports in the U.S. on hiatus and many people quarantined at home, the ratings for this event could be big.
The NBA suspended its season on March 11 due to the coronavirus pandemic. There appears to be increasing pessimism about being able to restart the NBA season, according to ESPN
