opened reservations for its 2023 Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV at 1 p.m. on Sept. 18. By a little after 1:10, they were gone.

The first of many electric Cadillacs

The Lyriq is the first Cadillac electric vehicle (EV), but the first of many. The brand has announced a plan to sell an all-electric lineup as part of GM’s push to sell mostly electric cars by 2035.

The Lyriq is a midsize SUV with crisp, tailored style and a driving range of around 300 miles (according to Cadillac, but not yet tested by the EPA). Its cabin includes a massive 33-inch-long LCD touchscreen that takes up much of the dashboard and puts a head-up display directly in the driver’s line of sight. It uses GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving technology and a remote parking system that can park the vehicle after the driver gets out.

two SUVs, the Model Y and Model X, which are the bestselling electric SUVs on the market today. But automakers are bringing out dozens of new EVs this year. Those interested in a Lyriq will have many more choices by the time it arrives in showrooms.

There will be other opportunities

The quick sellout doesn’t mean you won’t be able to buy a 2023 Lyriq at all. This weekend’s sale only covered the Lyriq Debut Edition. That model is rear-wheel-drive, with a single motor mounted to the rear axle and good for 340 horsepower. It includes a 19-speaker audio system, active noise cancellation, and over-the-air updates for its Google

Reserving one required only a $100 refundable deposit.

Other models will be available later, including an all-wheel-drive performance edition. But those interested might have to wait nearly a year to line up for other models. “While 2023 Cadillac Lyriq Debut Edition reservations are full, more vehicles will be available to order through the Cadillac dealer network starting summer 2022,” says Cadillac Global Vice President Rory Harvey.

Cadillac didn’t say how many of the first-edition vehicles sold, although one Texas dealer offered reservations for “one of the first 1,500 vehicles built.”
