India stocks lower at close of trade; Nifty 50 down 1.00%

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 lost 1.00%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index fell 1.12%.

The best performers of the session on the Nifty 50 were NTPC Ltd (NS:NTPC), which rose 0.84% or 1.50 points to trade at 180.95 at the close. Meanwhile, Tata Motors Ltd (NS:TAMO) added 0.84% or 3.65 points to end at 435.85 and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (NS:MRTI) was up 0.68% or 58.05 points to 8,600.00 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Adani Enterprises Ltd (NS:ADEL), which fell 2.92% or 56.95 points to trade at 1,896.20 at the close. HDFC Bank Ltd (NS:HDBK) declined 2.58% or 42.05 points to end at 1,588.65 and Apollo Hospitals Enterprises Ltd. (NS:APLH) was down 2.28% or 100.90 points to 4,317.25.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (BO:MRTI) which rose 0.76% to 8,607.00, NTPC Ltd (BO:NTPC) which was up 0.75% to settle at 180.80 and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (BO:SUN) which gained 0.37% to close at 955.70.

The worst performers were HDFC Bank Ltd (BO:HDBK) which was down 2.63% to 1,588.65 in late trade, State Bank Of India (BO:SBI) which lost 2.12% to settle at 547.25 and Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd (BO:HDFC) which was down 2.09% to 2,613.00 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the India National Stock Exchange by 1218 to 677 and 75 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1996 fell and 1387 advanced, while 103 ended unchanged.

The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 5.40% to 13.41.

Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.19% or 3.45 to $1,838.05 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 0.58% or 0.44 to hit $75.28 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.38% or 0.31 to trade at $81.28 a barrel.

USD/INR was up 0.03% to 82.04, while EUR/INR rose 0.17% to 86.93.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.11% at 105.19.
