India stocks lower at close of trade; Nifty 50 down 0.51%

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 fell 0.51% to hit a new 3-months low, while the BSE Sensex 30 index declined 0.55%.

The best performers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Adani Enterprises Ltd (NS:ADEL), which rose 14.27% or 170.35 points to trade at 1,363.85 at the close. Meanwhile, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (NS:APSE) added 5.42% or 30.45 points to end at 592.45 and Asian Paints Ltd. (NS:ASPN) was up 2.87% or 78.90 points to 2,828.80 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Cipla Ltd. (NS:CIPL), which fell 4.61% or 43.80 points to trade at 906.40 at the close. Hindalco Industries Ltd. (NS:HALC) declined 3.06% or 12.60 points to end at 399.20 and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd (NS:REDY) was down 2.36% or 104.40 points to 4,316.60.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Asian Paints Ltd. (BO:ASPN) which rose 3.03% to 2,833.00, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (BO:MAHM) which was up 1.79% to settle at 1,279.85 and Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (BO:PGRD) which gained 1.32% to close at 222.25.

The worst performers were Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd (BO:REDY) which was down 2.35% to 4,311.25 in late trade, Tata Steel Ltd (BO:TISC) which lost 2.03% to settle at 103.95 and Reliance Industries Ltd (BO:RELI) which was down 1.99% to 2,321.95 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the India National Stock Exchange by 979 to 927 and 61 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1665 rose and 1657 declined, while 136 ended unchanged.

Shares in Cipla Ltd. (NS:CIPL) fell to 52-week lows; losing 4.61% or 43.80 to 906.40.

The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 1.05% to 14.02.

Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.50% or 9.20 to $1,815.70 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 1.31% or 0.99 to hit $76.67 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 1.10% or 0.90 to trade at $82.94 a barrel.

USD/INR was down 0.03% to 82.62, while EUR/INR fell 0.01% to 87.65.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.03% at 104.65.
