Facebook Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer will leave the social-media giant next year after 13 years at the company and eight years in the CTO position, the company confirmed Wednesday.

In a Facebook post, Schroepfer said the move, which will happen “sometime in 2022,” will allow him to spend more time with his family and on philanthropy. He added that he will become the company’s first senior fellow next year. He also said another top executive at the company, Andrew Bosworth, will replace him.

As CTO, Schroepfer oversaw the company’s artificial intelligence efforts.

“I am extraordinarily proud of what the team has achieved from unleashing the benefits of AI to bringing VR to life and connecting more people around the world through technology,” he said in his post.

In a message to employees Wednesday, Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said that as senior fellow, Schroepfer “will focus on helping us recruit and develop technical talent, improve how we build… and continuing to foster our AI investments.”

Zuckerberg also said Bosworth will continue to lead Facebook Reality Labs and oversee augmented reality and virtual reality as he takes on the CTO role.
