Deep Dive: Here are the best-performing Nasdaq stocks of 2019

This post was originally published on this site

The Nasdaq Composite Index hit another milestone Dec. 26, passing 9,000 points for the first time. The index, known as a benchmark for technology companies, is huge — 2,690 stocks. Today we’ll show three lists of winners for 2019.

The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, +0.00%  is weighted by market capitalization, which means the five largest components — Apple AAPL, +0.18%, Microsoft MSFT, +0.01%, Amazon.com AMZN, +1.34%, Facebook FB, +0.10%  and Google holding company Alphabet GOOG, -0.15% GOOGL, -0.09% — make up 36% of the index’s market value.

MarketWatch’s Mark DeCambre reviewed the index’s performance since it topped its previous 8,000-point milestone in August 2018 and found that a good part of its gain was provided by non-tech companies, including Lululemon Athletica LULU, +0.30%  and Starbucks SBUX, +0.09%.

Breaking down the index

The bulky Nasdaq has so many stocks that many investors focus on the Nasdaq-100 Index NDX, +0.07%, which comprises the 103 largest non-financial companies in the full Nasdaq Composite Index. The components of the Nasdaq-100 make up 74% of the full index by market cap, according to data provided by FactSet. You can invest in the Nasdaq-100 as a group with the Invesco QQQ Trust ETF QQQ, +0.06%.

Since the Nasdaq-100 excludes financial companies (banks, insurers, real-estate companies and even exchanges such as Nasdaq Inc. NDAQ, +0.03% ), we have also looked at the Nasdaq Financial-100 Index IXF, -0.14%, which makes up only 5% of the full Nasdaq.

Going back to the full index, the best performers of 2019 are smaller companies, mostly in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries.
