Australia stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 down 0.96%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.96% to hit a new 1-month low.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Mesoblast Ltd (ASX:MSB), which rose 8.43% or 0.08 points to trade at 0.96 at the close. Meanwhile, Westgold Resources Ltd (ASX:WGX) added 7.74% or 0.12 points to end at 1.67 and St Barbara Ltd (ASX:SBM) was up 5.79% or 0.04 points to 0.64 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Amcor PLC (ASX:AMC), which fell 9.53% or 1.57 points to trade at 14.91 at the close. Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Ltd (ASX:CUV) declined 6.45% or 1.36 points to end at 19.71 and Polynovo Ltd (ASX:PNV) was down 6.19% or 0.10 points to 1.51.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 800 to 497 and 401 ended unchanged.

Shares in Amcor PLC (ASX:AMC) fell to 52-week lows; losing 9.53% or 1.57 to 14.91. Shares in Westgold Resources Ltd (ASX:WGX) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 7.74% or 0.12 to 1.67.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 8.50% to 13.83.

Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.03% or 0.60 to $2,022.70 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 1.03% or 0.74 to hit $70.92 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.86% or 0.65 to trade at $74.67 a barrel.

AUD/USD was unchanged 0.00% to 0.67, while AUD/JPY fell 0.58% to 90.46.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.33% at 101.39.
