Australia stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 down 0.37%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.37%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Nuix Ltd (ASX:NXL), which rose 4.00% or 0.06 points to trade at 1.56 at the close. Meanwhile, Whitehaven Coal Ltd (ASX:WHC) added 3.94% or 0.24 points to end at 6.33 and Pointsbet Holdings Ltd (ASX:PBH) was up 3.69% or 0.06 points to 1.69 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Mesoblast Ltd (ASX:MSB), which fell 9.80% or 0.05 points to trade at 0.46 at the close. Polynovo Ltd (ASX:PNV) declined 5.70% or 0.09 points to end at 1.40 and Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (ASX:FMG) was down 5.27% or 1.13 points to 20.30.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 670 to 593 and 405 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 4.18% to 11.44.

Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.19% or 3.65 to $1,969.55 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 0.48% or 0.40 to hit $84.03 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 0.41% or 0.36 to trade at $87.19 a barrel.

AUD/USD was unchanged 0.12% to 0.65, while AUD/JPY fell 0.25% to 94.14.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.11% at 103.47.
