Australia stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 up 1.26%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 gained 1.26% to hit a new 1-month high.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Nickel Mines Ltd (ASX:NIC), which rose 7.10% or 0.06 points to trade at 0.90 at the close. Meanwhile, Ramelius Resources Ltd (ASX:RMS) added 5.84% or 0.08 points to end at 1.45 and Newcrest Mining Ltd (ASX:NCM) was up 5.16% or 1.46 points to 29.74 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Nuix Ltd (ASX:NXL), which fell 5.08% or 0.06 points to trade at 1.12 at the close. Silver Lake Resources Ltd (ASX:SLR) declined 2.35% or 0.03 points to end at 1.25 and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Ltd (ASX:FPH) was down 2.16% or 0.55 points to 24.90.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 774 to 555 and 411 ended unchanged.

Shares in Newcrest Mining Ltd (ASX:NCM) rose to 52-week highs; rising 5.16% or 1.46 to 29.74.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 0.32% to 14.01.

Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.73% or 14.65 to $2,018.45 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 0.73% or 0.58 to hit $80.32 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 0.61% or 0.51 to trade at $84.69 a barrel.

AUD/USD was unchanged 0.51% to 0.67, while AUD/JPY rose 0.11% to 88.76.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.40% at 101.84.
