Australia stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 up 0.35%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 added 0.35%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Northern Star Resources Ltd (ASX:NST), which rose 10.64% or 1.470 points to trade at 15.290 at the close. Meanwhile, Saracen Mineral Holdings Ltd (ASX:SAR) added 9.58% or 0.50 points to end at 5.72 and Westgold Resources Ltd (ASX:WGX) was up 7.08% or 0.170 points to 2.570 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Nanosonics Ltd (ASX:NAN), which fell 4.70% or 0.27 points to trade at 5.48 at the close. Mesoblast Ltd (ASX:MSB) declined 4.21% or 0.150 points to end at 3.410 and ALS Ltd (ASX:ALQ) was down 3.53% or 0.34 points to 9.30.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 729 to 456 and 375 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 6.05% to 20.251.

Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.25% or 4.80 to $1915.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 0.54% or 0.21 to hit $39.43 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.46% or 0.19 to trade at $41.48 a barrel.

AUD/USD was down 0.32% to 0.7156, while AUD/JPY fell 0.36% to 75.62.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.02% at 93.525.
