Australia stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 up 0.34%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.34%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Whitehaven Coal Ltd (ASX:WHC), which rose 6.52% or 0.52 points to trade at 8.49 at the close. Meanwhile, Beach Energy Ltd (ASX:BPT) added 5.18% or 0.09 points to end at 1.73 and Woodside Energy Ltd (ASX:WDS) was up 4.25% or 1.43 points to 35.08 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Pointsbet Holdings Ltd (ASX:PBH), which fell 6.44% or 0.15 points to trade at 2.18 at the close. Kogan.com Ltd (ASX:KGN) declined 5.07% or 0.18 points to end at 3.37 and Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (ASX:FMG) was down 4.59% or 0.79 points to 16.41.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 812 to 563 and 409 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 1.79% to 15.45.

Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.11% or 1.85 to $1,720.75 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 2.33% or 2.02 to hit $88.89 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 2.47% or 2.30 to trade at $95.32 a barrel.

AUD/USD was unchanged 0.45% to 0.68, while AUD/JPY fell 0.22% to 95.24.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.42% at 109.96.
