Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the , and sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the lost 0.10%, while the index lost 0.11%, and the index fell 0.07%.

The best performers of the session on the were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:), which rose 0.71% or 1.98 points to trade at 279.52 at the close. Meanwhile, Apple Inc (NASDAQ:) added 0.58% or 1.56 points to end at 268.48 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:) was up 0.50% or 0.59 points to 117.89 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were 3M Company (NYSE:), which fell 1.28% or 2.17 points to trade at 167.66 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:) declined 0.94% or 3.31 points to end at 347.90 and Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:) was down 0.86% or 0.60 points to 69.06.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were AutoZone Inc (NYSE:) which rose 6.79% to 1250.00, NortonLifeLock Inc (NASDAQ:) which was up 3.46% to settle at 26.28 and Advance Auto Parts Inc (NYSE:) which gained 3.03% to close at 156.17.

The worst performers were Franklin Resources Inc (NYSE:) which was down 4.37% to 25.84 in late trade, Mohawk Industries Inc (NYSE:) which lost 3.85% to settle at 133.54 and Cboe Global Markets Inc (NYSE:) which was down 3.29% to 115.72 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Technical Communications (NASDAQ:) which rose 308.16% to 8.000, Lmp Automotive Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:) which was up 75.54% to settle at 13.92 and Venus Concept Inc (NASDAQ:) which gained 73.67% to close at 5.21.

The worst performers were Francescas Holdings (NASDAQ:) which was down 37.27% to 12.44 in late trade, Conns Inc (NASDAQ:) which lost 33.41% to settle at 13.65 and Advaxis Inc (NASDAQ:) which was down 21.51% to 0.6397 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1406 to 1399 and 103 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1428 rose and 1222 declined, while 80 ended unchanged.

Shares in AutoZone Inc (NYSE:) rose to all time highs; up 6.79% or 79.51 to 1250.00. Shares in Franklin Resources Inc (NYSE:) fell to 5-year lows; losing 4.37% or 1.18 to 25.84. Shares in NortonLifeLock Inc (NASDAQ:) rose to 52-week highs; up 3.46% or 0.88 to 26.28. Shares in Technical Communications (NASDAQ:) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 308.16% or 6.040 to 8.000. Shares in Lmp Automotive Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:) rose to all time highs; gaining 75.54% or 5.99 to 13.92. Shares in Conns Inc (NASDAQ:) fell to 52-week lows; losing 33.41% or 6.85 to 13.65.

The , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.13% to 15.68.

Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.26% or 3.85 to $1468.75 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.15% or 0.09 to hit $59.11 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.02% or 0.01 to trade at $64.16 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.00% to 1.1093, while USD/JPY rose 0.05% to 108.75.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.16% at 97.455.
