NEW YORK (Reuters) – The United States said on Tuesday it filed a civil lawsuit accusing CVS Health Corp (N:) and its Omnicare unit of fraudulently billing Medicare for drugs dispensed to elderly and disabled people without valid prescriptions.

Omnicare was accused of failing to obtain new prescriptions from doctors after the old ones expired or ran out of refills, and instead assigning new numbers to old prescriptions. The U.S. Department of Justice said this enabled Omnicare to dispense drugs for months or years after the prescriptions expired.
