The Margin: He got $10,000 in donations after joking that he’d ‘tap-dance at midnight’ to annoy his downstairs MAGA neighbor

Last week, Amy Ziemak saw a sign in the window of an apartment building across the street in downtown Cleveland. She got a kick out of it, so she posted this on Twitter:

It didn’t take long for the joke at President Trump’s expense to spread across social media, with one tweet garnering about half a million likes in a matter of days.

Jett Croisant was the man behind the sign. He told BuzzFeed News that he “did it for the humor” and really didn’t expect much to come of it. But since Twitter TWTR, +1.55% took it for a spin, he said he’s racked up more than $10,000 in donations and the money is still pouring in.

“This is amazing,” Croisant explained, adding the he’s even received tap shoes. “Every two to three seconds, I was getting Venmo’d money. It didn’t slow down until Friday. Today it’s picked up again, and donations are starting to get bigger. The biggest donation I’ve gotten is $50 a couple of times.”

He said he’s planning to donate all the funds to the ACLU, and is targeting the end of the week for his midnight tap-dancing, which he’ll fill for everybody who had sent money.

As for the downstairs neighbor, Croisant told BuzzFeed News that they’ve never met.

“It frustrated me a lot,” he said of the “dumb” banners. “When we had the protest in Cleveland, that night they took it down. A couple nights later, they put it back up. It didn’t make me too happy… so I thought it would be a kind of funny to do to annoy them.”
