Well, this week has certainly given Elon Musk something to sing about.
After Tesla stock surged late Wednesday after the company reported a profitable fourth quarter that beat expectations, CEO Musk dropped a surprise single on Friday morning called “Don’t Doubt ur Vibe.”
The 48-year-old billionaire, who’s dating Canadian musician Grimes (aka Claire Elise Boucher), changed his verified Twitter TWTR, -2.47% account handle to E “D” M (a riff on his initials and EDM, or electronic dance music), and shared the unexpected track on Twitter and SoundCloud early Friday morning. The cover art shows Tesla’s TSLA, +0.51% much-discussed Cybertruck soaring over a red planet, which could be Mars.
It’s unclear whether Grimes, who produces and performs EDM music, collaborated on the song. “I wrote the lyrics & performed the vocals!!” Musk tweeted. The result: a pulsing and spacey (or, SpaceX-y?) electronic track that repeats these four lines over and over:
‘Don’t doubt your vibe / because it’s true / don’t doubt your vibe / because it’s you.’
“This song is hard” he tweeted, along with the “sweat smile” emoji.
Reactions were as mixed as the single, with some listeners praising Musk in his Twitter comments for being “one of the most interesting innovators and dreamers of our generation,” and others telling him to “maybe stick to rockets.”
Others responded by posting GIFs and videos of Musk’s awkward dance moves set to his new tune. Earlier this month, Musk had showed a striptease-style shimmy on stage at Tesla’s new Shanghai factory that has been immortalized on video. He later joked that his dance was an attempt to gain Pornhub followers.
Musk also tweeted photos of himself working on his new song in a recording studio, and announced this it’s the second release under his “Emo G Records” brand. He previously released the single “RIP Harambe” last year, which was an AutoTuned rap tribute to the gorilla killed at a Cincinnati Zoo in 2016.
