If like the pilots in the movie “Top Gun” you have the need for speed, electric cars should be on your list of vehicles to purchase. With nearly instant torque, an EV explodes from the starting line in ways that most gas-powered vehicles can’t match.

To help you narrow down your search we compiled a list of the 10 fastest mass-market electric cars currently for sale. We’ve tossed out the supercars with limited availability and nation-bankrupting price tags and found only the vehicles actual mortals can buy.

1. 2022 Tesla Model S Plaid

It’s an impressive piece of engineering from the automaker that made EVs mainstream. Now we just have to wait to see what the upcoming Tesla Roadster can accomplish.

It’ll go from zero to 60 in 2.5 seconds and it does all this with a luxury interior and more importantly, an estimated EPA range of 471 miles. That makes it the range king, stealing the crown from Tesla. It also looks outstanding.

3. Tesla Model X Plaid

If you’re looking to go fast with doors that open upward instead of out without buying a supercar, the Model X Plaid should be on your shortlist. It’s still pricey at $138,990, but it can haul you and your family from zero to 60 in 2.5 seconds. The top speed of 163 mph is best used on a track. Right now, though, it’s the fastest EV SUV available. 

4. Tesla Model 3 Performance

The Taycan Turbo S sedan handles wonderfully while also hitting a top speed of 161 mph and the ability to blast from zero to 60 in 2.6 seconds. It pulls these numbers off thanks to its dual motors outputting up to 616 horsepower and a maximum 774 lb-ft of torque.

6. Tesla Model Y Performance

Tesla’s smaller SUV might not have a Plaid mode, but it’s no slouch on the road. The Performance variant can haul itself from zero to 60 in 3.5 seconds. Its top speed is 155 mph and it does it with an EPA-estimated range of 303 miles.

7. Audi RS e-tron GT

Audi’s performance EV variant is a good reminder that the German automaker is sticking to its roots as it transitions to electric vehicles. The RS e-tron GT has a top speed of 155 mph and will do zero to 60 in 3.1 seconds. It can produce up to 637 horsepower and 612 pound-feet of torque. It does all of this while exhibiting impressive handling thanks to the Audi quattro all-wheel-drive system. 

8. Mercedes-Benz AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+

Top speed: 155 mph

0-60 time: 3.4 seconds

The vehicle’s motors output up to 751 horsepower and 752 lb-ft of torque. That propels the sedan from zero to 60 in 3.4 seconds. 

9. BMW iX M60

10. BMW i4 M50

Top speed: 140 mph

0-60 time: 3.7 seconds

BMW’s newest generation of EVs got a huge boost with the BMW i4 M50. The sedan boasts impressive dynamics. According to the automaker, the i4 M50 can leap from zero to 60 in 3.7 seconds, thanks to a dual-motor setup that produces 536 horsepower and 586 pound-feet of torque. The top speed is 140 mph. It does all of this in a package that most would be hard-pressed to note is an EV.
