Australia stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 down 0.90%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.90%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Mesoblast Ltd (ASX:MSB), which rose 14.29% or 0.320 points to trade at 2.560 at the close. Meanwhile, Resmed Inc DRC (ASX:RMD) added 3.28% or 0.900 points to end at 28.320 and Insurance Australia Group Ltd (ASX:IAG) was up 3.16% or 0.150 points to 4.900 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Westgold Resources Ltd (ASX:WGX), which fell 8.65% or 0.230 points to trade at 2.430 at the close. Perseus Mining Ltd (ASX:PRU) declined 8.08% or 0.105 points to end at 1.195 and Nearmap Ltd (ASX:NEA) was down 6.98% or 0.150 points to 2.000.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 962 to 426 and 310 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 6.90% to 14.495.

Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.59% or 10.75 to $1846.15 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 1.19% or 0.62 to hit $51.62 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 1.68% or 0.94 to trade at $55.05 a barrel.

AUD/USD was down 0.71% to 0.7704, while AUD/JPY fell 0.45% to 80.24.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.31% at 90.347.
