Australia stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 down 0.77%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.77%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Polynovo Ltd (ASX:PNV), which rose 25.17% or 0.360 points to trade at 1.790 at the close. Meanwhile, Alumina Ltd (ASX:AWC) added 3.88% or 0.075 points to end at 2.010 and Regis Resources Ltd (ASX:RRL) was up 3.84% or 0.070 points to 1.895 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were ARB Corporation Ltd (ASX:ARB), which fell 12.31% or 6.50 points to trade at 46.32 at the close. Inghams Group Ltd (ASX:ING) declined 5.95% or 0.21 points to end at 3.32 and Pro Medicus Ltd (ASX:PME) was down 5.17% or 2.72 points to 49.90.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 799 to 584 and 380 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 4.73% to 13.699.

Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.54% or 9.70 to $1808.50 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.89% or 0.70 to hit $78.93 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.74% or 0.60 to trade at $81.47 a barrel.

AUD/USD was up 0.22% to 0.7184, while AUD/JPY rose 0.20% to 82.75.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.15% at 95.850.
